Living in a Canadian Homestay

As a Homestay student, you are taking part in a unique and wonderful adventure. You are not alone. Thousands of other students are currently involved in Homestay. As well, many people are available and eager to help you in this special time – your teachers, your program coordinator, and, above all, your Homestay family.

We make every effort to place you in families that have their own students studying at Heritage Christian School. We also will match you up with a family according to your requests on the Student Homestay Application Form you filled out when you registered at HCS.

It would be to your advantage for you to arrive in Kelowna approximately 3 days prior to starting school so that you are not feeling so tired. Your homestay family and/or program coordinator will anxiously meet you at the Kelowna International Airport and help you during those first few moments in Kelowna. Jet lag will definitely be an issue for you, so take your time to get settled and relax during those first few days.

What a great opportunity this is for you – to live in a Canadian home and be part of the family. You will have your own bedroom, which will be your responsibility to keep clean. The family will supply 3 meals per day, assist you in getting to school, provide your normal living needs, and support you during your time here. You will become proficient in the English language and learn of the Canadian culture by choosing. This is a great experience for you!

You will make friends from all over the world. You will establish relationships and have memories that will last a lifetime. Some of the changes from food to the challenges of studying in an English speaking school may produce some culture shock. This can be a bit overwhelming for some students, but talk to your Homestay family or Program Coordinator. They have probably seen it before and can help reassure you that it will get easier as time goes by.

Our ultimate goal is that you will grow in the grace of God and fulfill His purpose for your life. Embrace all that Heritage Christian School and your homestay have for you and enjoy the experience of studying in another culture.
